Name: Percival de Rolo
Canon: Critical Role
Canon Point: episode 115, Vox Machina campaign
Age: early-mid 20s

Background: here

Personality: As the third child of a noble family, Percy had access to thorough education throughout his early life and took great advantage of it. Because he had five other siblings to share the potential burden of ruling someday, Percy was free to pursue whatever interests he wanted, including engineering, tinkering, and chemistry. Several other characters, in particular Anna Ripley, acknowledge Percival's genius in inventing weapons in particular.

Percy generally believes that the ends justify the means. He has been willing to make deals with questionable people (the Clasp) despite objections from the rest of Vox Machina; prior to this, Percy ended up embracing a demon for the sake of revenge, which led him to designing his first firearm. Despite having a sense of what this kind of technology could be capable of if produced on a larger scale, and knowing that his designs might escape his grasp and be reproduced by others, Percival goes ahead with producing multiple firearms and does not hesitate to use them if they give him an advantage.

Though he is often quiet, speaking only when necessary, Percival is capable of being remarkably articulate and persuasive. This is put to effective use earlier in the campaign when Keyleth needs a lawyer: Percy acts as legal counsel on her behalf and performs so well that the rest of the group considers him their unofficial lawyer, should the need arise again. He is also, at times, the diplomat of Vox Machina, at times attempting to use knowledge gained through his early life at court to get the party into places they might not otherwise be. With a mind for planning, Percy is a good on the ground tactician and can coordinate with the rest of the party for effective attacks.

As well as being persuasive, Percy flashes his sharp wit and somewhat dark sense of humor now and then. This ranges from naming his inventions things like Diplomacy (a gauntlet that deals electrical damage), Bad News (his first rifle), and Manners (a device that can fully restrain another person).

Percy can become single-minded in his focus, especially if his focus at the time involves tinkering and creating something new. As well as creating ammunition for Vex and Vax and creating weapons and defensive measures for himself, Percy dedicates months to creating a bomb for Scalan to use. This focus, however, can turn into obsession, as seen in his quest for revenge. At times it has led him to become reckless, resulting at least once in imprisonment and leading to the death of another party member.

The ability and willingness to forgive becomes a sticking point as Percy develops. He is able to forgive Anna Ripley for propagating firearms and selling not only his designs, but fully realized weapons. He does this just prior to her killing him. Though Percy finds virtue in other people, he is less willing to forgive himself for his faults and failures, often dwelling on them even as he tries to move on. It is his relationship with Vex that starts moving him in that direction, and they find common ground in believing forgiveness to be a path toward growth. It takes work, but Percy attempts to let go of grudges, both new and old, trying to keep in mind where that road led him before.

Though comfortable with his party members, Percy tends to play a lot of his feelings close to the chest: especially those he develops for Vex'ahlia. He keeps them buried for a long time, believing that a relationship between them would never be healthy. Though he refuses to allow himself to act fully on his feelings, Percy shows his affection in the creation of weapons for Vex, including exploding arrows. Percy calls the rest of the party his family, which is no small thing after losing most of his own. Despite a strained relationship with Vax'ildan, Percy never once stops thinking of him as a friend and brother, and dedicates himself to trying to repair their relationship without pushing Vax's boundaries.

After a remarkably privileged childhood, Percy is still prone to arrogance and, sometimes, snobbery. He knows how to use that to great effect and can even do kindness through it. After realizing how important appearances of success are to Vex'ahlia, especially when faced with seeing the elven side of her family again, Percival bestows a title on her, making her a noble in Whitestone and insisting that a clerk make note of that on an invitation. He is perfectly happy to insist on protocol for Vex'ahlia's sake, bringing to bear the full weight of his own nobility to jab at the pretention of other people.
